Challenge

Hanson Robotics’ most advanced human-like robot, Sophia, has captured the dreams and imaginations of a world in wonder over the future of AI. With celebrity appearances on TV shows across the world and an impressive CV as Innovation Ambassador for the United Nations Development, Sophia is now a household name. And though she is closer to humanity than a robot has ever been, her creators set out to further close the gap and give her the most signature of human applications.

The Design Process

 

Hanson Robotics approached Emanuele Ricci to design a signature that would represent Sophia in both character and purpose. We needed to give robotics the human touch, and set out to create a signature of multiple functions: a logomark, a storytelling device, and a mark of authenticity for Sophia as both an invention and a citizen.

Blending human with AI

 

We blended a hand drawn style with AI qualities to create an original typeface that would become Sophia’s official mark. Working closely with her creators, we explored the traits and nuances of Sophia’s character and channeled this into the spirit of the design.

Conclusion

 

An extensive process of exploration and iteration led us to a signature that personifies Sophia and achieved the ambition of capturing her humanity. It is feminine, empathetic and far from what the world expects to come out of the hands of a robot.
